Precious Things that I learned from my Internship

Updated: Jul 17, 2020

My internship at Thistle Card has taught me more than I could have imagined. Like all the adults said, “you will grow up after experiencing from internship”, “after you get scolded by your mentor during the internship, you will become stronger” etc. Well, I really agree with what they said, and as a graphic design intern, I feel my duties were diverse and challenging. Sometimes it is tough to recall everything I have taken in after the past few months, however, I think that these few things are the most precious things I have learned from my internship industry.

Time management

Well, earlier during college, I might have missed a class just because I had some personal issues. But during the internship which is the starting of my work life, I can’t simply be absent on a regular basis. Internship helps to manage time better by maintaining a balance between work and personal life. Before working as an intern, I lacked time management skill and always procrastinated. My internship really improved my time management skill as I prioritize important work at first and finish my work on time.

Organisational Skills

At college, I used to have the leisure to focus on one thing at a time. After class, I can do anything I want and hang out with friends. But when I first started my internship, the switch-up to early morning and working 8 hours during weekdays nearly killed me. However, after my internship, It enhanced my organization skills and it is really helpful for my future. Stronger organizational skills make you more productive.

Adaptability Skills

Not everyone is adaptable when they first start their internship, same goes to me. My internship strengthened my adaptability skills and I believed that it is really useful for everyone’s future career as well, but if you refuse to be adaptive, it is a loss. Being adaptive to your surroundings is one of the most important skills, it is not only desirable to employers but also important for self-growth. So, learning some adaptability skills while working as an intern really helps a lot.

Communication Skills

As an introvert, I am shy and barely speak up. But, after experiencing my internship, I have improved my communication skills. Communicating well is a gem of skill, every time I work on something or I have a new idea, I will speak out and share my thoughts. Plus, my company almost once a week we will have a short meeting to communicate and share our design concept and ideas. At this time, my communication skill improved and this is one of the important skills that I have learnt

I’m not alone

When I first came into this position, I felt like I’m an outsider and had no idea what my career was going on and I lacked confidence about what I could do and what I am really good at. Hence, my internship has given me a better understanding of my own skill and most importantly I have learnt that I am not alone. This job has taught me that almost everyone in the company is the same, we work as a team. Doesn't care how long you worked in the company, or you are an intern, we all are the same in the company. I really appreciated that after this internship I learnt to be more confident and understand my own skill.

Lastly, these are the precious things I learned from my internship and I want to thank everyone at Thistle Card who has helped me and taught me. It has been a great gaining experience here and I'll indebt to those who gave me a hand here. To whoever has been reading this blog, as far as your internship goes always remember to work hard and be friendly, ask questions if you don’t understand anything while working. I hope you can learn a lot of things during your internship as much as I did.
